I have posted some photographs of Prize-Giving on our Scrapbook Page. Unfortunately several could not be posted as we did not have the permission of the all the parents concerned, and the photographs are of groups.
ATHLETICS
The interschool athletics meeting was held on 14 February 2011 at the Bellville Stadium. PHS entered a total of 86 athletes in the annual interschool competition in which 13 high schools took part.
We did extremely well in the hurdles and the sprints, and some of our athletes also excelled in a few field events. Brenton Appolis (Grade 11) missed the long jump record for under-17 boys by a few centimetres, having jumped a distance of 6,46 metres. He also won the 100m and 20m sprints. Meeka’eel Osman (also in Grade 11) won both the 200m and 400m events in his age group. Our team captain, Matthew Magiera, also performed very well on the day, winning both the 100m and 400m events for boys over 18. Juan Charles (Gr8) won the boys’ under-14 hurdles, and his twin brother, Michal, who was leading his hurdle event was way ahead of the pack, but unfortunately tripped over the penultimate hurdle and finished third. Julian Charles participated in the high jump for boys’ under 15, and came second. Tasneem Adams and Mandy Wesson achieved first and second places respectively in the hurdles for girls over 18.
Our athletes certainly did us very proud, and their determination and hard work ensured that PHS achieved fourth position out of the thirteen schools, and excellent achievement. Our athletes qualified for a total of 35 events for the semi-champs on Monday 28 February 2011, also to be held at the Bellville Stadium. Congratulations to all our athletes, and thanks to the coaches and managers for their unselfish dedication.

U/15 CRICKET REPORTS (Mr. C. Philander (Coach))
MATCH 1: 29 January vs Blue Bells (club)
Blue Bells elected to bat first and scored 120 runs all out.
In reply, Plumstead put on a spirited performance, but fell 7 runs short of the victory target.
MATCH 2: 4 February vs Camps Bay High
The match was reduced to 20 overs a side as too much time was lost for the scheduled start. Plumstead won the toss and elected to bat. Plumstead posted a good score of 140 runs, setting the opposition a stiff challenge of 7 runs to the over. Paul Fortune shone with the bat, scoring 67 runs which included 4 sixes.
He was ably assisted by the top six who all contributed on the day.
Plumstead then backed up their batting with an excellent bowling and fielding display which saw them bowl the opposition out for 41 runs. Kodi Collins and Shakeel Baderoen were the outstanding bowlers on the day.
MATCH 3: 11 February vs Samora Machel Academy (T20)
The build-up to the match was highlighted by the arrival of a television crew who interviewed Samora’s top bowler before the match. He was also handed an award for his selection to the Western Province Team. Samora won the toss and elected to field, which was somewhat surprising. Our frontline batsmen struggled against their menacing bowling attack and were unable to take full advantage of the good batting conditions. After we lost some early wickets, Shane Ingham and Tandiwa Mkhetwa got the innings back on track. Ingham, especially, was ruthless on his way to an unbeaten 62, smashing the visitors top bowler for 5 sixes.
Tandiwa played the shot of the day with a huge six onto the M5. The bowlers then restricted the visitors to 105.
MATCH 4: 12 February vs Settlers High
Settlers won the toss and elected to bat. Plumstead bowled exceptionally well up front, with Shakeel Baderoen again the pick of the bowlers. Plumstead restricted the visitors to 90 runs all out off 35 overs. Unfortunately, it was not to be our day as our top six batsmen, needlessly surrendered their wickets with some very indifferent shots. In the end, it was left up to the tail to do the run chase and they nearly succeeded…
Plumstead missed the cut by 5 runs with 15 overs to spare! By far, our worst performance to date.
[Again, we need to express our appreciation to Mr Philander for the time and effort he puts into coaching the team.]
