PHS Newsletter – December 2011

THIS WEBSITE

As I am retiring at the end of December, I am not sure what will happen to this publication. A colleague has indicated her willingness to take over, but the amount of time (and learning the package) it requires may be problematic. This year I have not been able to give it the time it requires, and there are still undeveloped pages. While it would be nice to continue with and develop it, we shall have to wait and see what the future holds. Thank you to those who have supported this effort by subscribing, sending in Past Pupil details and so on.

FINALLY

I wish all of you a blessed Christmas and a prosperous 2012. Please keep safe, especially on our notorious roads.

SHAWCO SHINE GRADUATION CEREMONY 2011

Shawco Shine Graduation Ceremony 2011 took place at UCT on the 15th of October. I was extremely proud to be associated with PHS, as a parent as well as an educator. Among the 11 schools that participated in the Shawco Shine project (Plumstead High, Abbots College, Good Hope, Pinelands High, Groote Schuur, San Souci, Windsor, Norman Henshilwood, Cape Town High, Camps Bay and Livingstone); Plumstead definitely took the most awards on the day. Our grade 11 as well as our grade 12 participants made us proud.

Our grade 11 learners were acknowledged for their school results in math and physics:

(Shawco took the average of their grade 10 final, grade 11 March and grade 11 June results)

  • Mathematics – 3rd Alexandra Himunchul and Shaistha Hassan.

  • Physical Sciences – 1st Alexandra Himunchul, 2nd Busisiwe Matontsi.

  • Accounting – 1st Shaistha Hassan, 2nd Erin Hermanus, and 3rd Tavia September.

Our grade 12 learners were acknowledged for their school results as well:

(Shawco took the average of their grade 11 final, grade 12 March and grade 12 June results)

  • Mathematics – 1st Luqmaan Salie, 2nd Michael Pinto, and 3rd Matthew Jackson.

  • Physical Sciences – 1st Luqmaan Salie, 3rd Matthew Jackson.

  • Accounting – 2nd Ryan Meyer

Shawco had 3 internal tests of their own; they took the average of these 3 tests and worked out the top 3 places in mathematics, physical sciences and accounting. Once again, in this category, our learners made us extremely proud.

Shawco Shine grade 11 internal tests:

  • Mathematics – 1st Shaistha Hassan

  • Physical Sciences – 3rd Alexandra Himunchul

  • Accounting – 1st Shaistha Hassan, 3rd Siyanda Thomas

Shawco Shine grade 12 internal tests:

  • Mathematics – 2nd Luqmaan Salie, 3rd Michael Pinto

  • Physical Sciences – 2nd Luqmaan Salie

  • Accounting – 1st Ryan Meyer

Shawco then took the averages of the learners’ mathematics, physical sciences and accounting results and worked out the overall top 10 positions in the programme.

Grade 11:

  • 1st – Shaistha Hassan

  • 4th – Alexandra Himunchul

  • 9th – Siyanda Thomas

Grade 12:

  • 2nd – Luqmaan Salie

  • 3rd – Michael Pinto

  • 8th – Matthew Jackson

  • 9th – Raees Davids

Well done to our learners who have sacrificed their Saturday mornings to attend the class. Well done to our educators and the Shawco Shine educators for doing a sterling job. Your hard work has paid off.

Good luck to our matriculants and our grade 11 learners in the upcoming final exams.

Thank you, Mrs Salie, for the time and effort you have put into giving our learners this opportunity.

NON NOBIS, DOMINE

Non Nobis, Domine

Not unto us, O Lord,

The praise and glory be

Of any deed or word

For in Thy judgement lies

To crown or bring to naught

All knowledge and device

That man has reached or wrought.

And we confess our blame,

How all too high we hold

That noise which men call fame,

That dross which men call gold.

For these we undergo

Our hot and godless days,

But in our soul we know

Not unto us the praise.

O Power by whom we live,

Creator, Judge and Friend,

Upholdingly forgive

Nor leave us at the end.

But grant us yet to see,

In all our piteous ways,

Non Nobis, Domine,

Not unto us the praise.

Non Nobis, Non Nobis, Non Nobis, Domine

(We hope to have photographs at a later stage.)

12 September

Our CHESS teams have recently enjoyed some very successful matches.

Against Steenberg High School, Plumstead High walked away victoriously. The score was 5 – 2. The boys who played Tracy Ward; Joel Carelse; Kirk Tobin; Luqmaan Salie; Chad Sias; Matthew Naido; Ezra Francis. Well done boys: you have made us proud again.

Our Chess Team was recently invited to play against Muizenberg High School. Unfortunately the entire team was not available due to some of our team writing Mock exams and others being in involved in other sports codes. Kirk Tobin was the only player available and played against all Muizenberg’s players: he was unbeaten! The score was a whooping 4 – 0. Well Done Kirk!

Our thanks to Mrs Salie for her time and effort.

Unfortunately we can publish only one photograph as the parents of the other players have not given us permision to publish photographs of their children.
